Collection & transport essentials
These requirements apply to every specimen received at BioLab, whether collected here or at a referring clinic.
Labelling
- Label the tube or container itself, never only the bag or lid.
- At least two patient identifiers: full name and date of birth.
- Add the date and time of collection and the collector’s initials.
- Send the completed request form with every specimen, with the diagnosis or ICD-CM code.
- Unlabelled, mislabelled or unaccompanied specimens are rejected without exception.
Order of draw
- Blood culture bottles
- Light-blue citrate (coagulation)
- Gold-top SST / plain serum
- Green-top heparin
- Lavender-top EDTA
- Grey-top fluoride oxalate
- Fill citrate tubes completely. Short draws are rejected.
Handling & transport
- Invert additive tubes gently 8–10 times; never shake.
- Separate serum and plasma within 2 hours of collection.
- Transport upright in a sealed biohazard bag with an absorbent liner.
- Keep samples out of direct sun and away from vehicle air-conditioning vents.
- Refrigerate at 2–8 °C where the test entry says so; never freeze whole blood.
Common rejection reasons
- Haemolysed, clotted, underfilled or wrong-tube specimens.
- Citrate tubes below the fill line.
- Specimens outside the stability window shown in the test entry.
- Leaking containers, or urine and stool with no preservative when required.
- Missing site or source on culture requests.
